چکیده

Seasonally dry forests and savannas consisting of sparse tree canopies and dominated by open grassland make up about 16 million square kilometers of tropical land of which only 1 million worldwide remains as natural vegetation (Miles et al. 2006). The remaining seasonally dry regions are cultivated (Williams 2008). Natural vegetation is adapted to the extreme seasonality, characterized by deep taproot systems and seasonal deciduousness, whereas human propagated vegetation is not (Griffith 1961). Watercourses and bodies in these areas are ephemeral because of the extreme seasonality of the hydroclimatic regime, which is further exacerbated by the presence of unusually high interannual rainfall variability (Murphy and Lugo 1986; Furley 2004). For example, the average total annual rainfall is 900 mm in

اثر هیدروژل و رژیم های آبیاری بر میزان کلروفیل، نیتروژن و بعضی شاخص‌های رشد و عملکرد ارزن علوفه‌ای (L.‌ Pennisetum glaucum)

Drought stress has an important role in yield reduction of crops. To investigate the effects of applying zeolite hydrogel (as a superabsorbent) in reduction of adverse effects of drought stress on chlorophyll content, nitrogen, growth indices and their relationships with quantitative and qualitative yield of pearl millet (cv. Nitrifeed), a split plot experiment (in space and time), based on ran...

Assessment of genetic diversity in accessions of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) using microsatellite (ISSR) markers

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) and napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) are the most economically important species in the genus Pennisetum. Knowledge of genetic diversity of these two species would enhance their potentials for utilization. The present work assessed the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship among Nigerian and Indian accessions of pearl millet an...

Myth, marula, and elephant: an assessment of voluntary ethanol intoxication of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) following feeding on the fruit of the marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea).

Africa can stir wild and fanciful notions in the casual visitor; one of these is the tale of inebriated wild elephants. The suggestion that the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) becomes intoxicated from eating the fruit of the marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) is an attractive, established, and persistent tale. This idea now permeates the African tourist industry, historical travelogues, the...

Effects of elephants on vegetation along a fenceline contrast in South Africa

We assessed the degree of damage of two common plant species, marula Sclerocarya birrea and the mountain aloe or flat-flowered aloe Aloe marlothii in two neighboring game reserves along a fenceline with respect to the presence of African elephants Loxodonta africana. One of these reserves, Thornybush, had 40-50 elephants while the other reserve, the Wits Rural facility, contained no elephants, ...
